About this item

Frances (1854-1941)and Mary Allen (1858-1941) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, were renowned pictorialist photographers who worked during the Colonial Revival (1880-1940). Pictorialists claimed that they “crafted” their photographs, rather than simply taking them.  Colonial Revivalists romanticized America’s pre-industrial past as a time when life was simpler and more harmonious. “Little Puritan” first appeared in a catalog published in 1911.
