About this item

This scene from a pageant held in the early 20th century in Deerfield, Massachusetts, is about the events of September 18, 1675, when Native American warriors ambushed and killed a group of teamsters and soldiers during King Philip’s (Metacom’s) War (1675-1678).  The teamsters, under the protection of the soldiers, were attempting to move wagonloads of their grain from Deerfield to a safer location in Hadley. In this photo we see a family saying goodbye to their father, as he and the other teamsters begin their journey.
