About this item

This is a scene from a pageant held in Deerfield, Massachusetts, in the early 20th century.  Participants reenacted an ambush that took place on September 18, 1675, in what is today South Deerfield.  Teamsters, guarded by soldiers, were attempting to move their grain to a safer location when they were attacked by the banks of the Muddy Brook by Native American warriors.  Casualties were high and because the brook ran red with blood, it was renamed “Bloody Brook.” This photograph shows the convoy’s departure from Deerfield.
