About this item

Mary and Frances Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts were art photographers who specialized in taking pictures reminiscent of the past.  They often posed their subjects wearing old-fashioned clothing.  Here, Elsa wears a “calash”- a style of hat that was popular 100 years before this picture was taken. It shaded the wearer’s face from the sun and it was collapsible. The term derives from the French carriage or “caleche,” which had a top that folded down like a fan.
