About this item

Nearly two miles long and 10 rods (165′) wide, Main Street in Northfield, Massachusetts, follows the original town plan. In early New England, towns were planned around a collection of home lots along a central street. Some of the maples and elms that line Main Street were planted around 1812-1815 as part of a beautification project.
