About this item

In the 1880s, thousands of Eastern European immigrants began arriving in the Connecticut River Valley in Massachusetts. Stephen G. Maniatty (1910-1984) if Deerfield, Massachusetts, painted this image of a young Eastern European woman in her dancing costume. He gives the impression of someone foreign and exotic, which is how many White native-born Massachusetts residents viewed the culture and customs of their neighbors.
