About this item

A domestic potter made and decorated this “redware” platter in the second quarter of the 19th century.  The grey clay was collected locally in New England and turned red when fired in a kiln.  Because it was cheap and locally made, redware was considered less desirable than transfer-printed earthenware imported from England.
