Beginning in 1905, the George A. Sheldon Company delivered coal in the Greenfield, Massachusetts, area. He was a grandson of George Sheldon, founder of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Coal was delivered in rock form.  Houses had exterior chutes that led to containers in basements and homeowners had to shovel the coal into their furnaces.
