About this item

A female pupil at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts, painted this landscape of Irish Ruins as part of her training in the ornamental arts. In order to learn to paint and draw, pupils copied prints published in books. Proud parents then displayed the pictures in their homes as symbols of their daughter’s abilities and refinement.
