About this item

This daguerreotype shows Thomas Arms (1812-?) and his wife Elizabeth (Hawks) Arms (1815-?), joined by her sisters Sarah Hawks Lawrence (1813-1884) (on the left) and Alma Hawks (1821-?) (on the right). The sisters’ interlocking arms suggests the close bond they shared. Sarah and Alma probably joined Elizabeth and Thomas Arms in Boston, Massachusetts, for their family portrait. Thomas and Elizabeth might have moved to Texas. After Thomas died, Elizabeth moved back to Deerfield, Massachusetts, where the sisters were reunited again.
