About this item

Girls stitched samplers in part, to prepare for the lifetime of sewing that was expected of them. This sampler includes the typical alphabet and numbers, maker’s name, and age. It also includes a Biblical verse, proverbs of Solomon 10:1: “A wise son maketh a glad father; But a foolish son is the heaviness of his Mother.” These were deep thoughts for a nine-year-old to contemplate. Sophia Smith (1765-1807) was from Hatfield, Massachusetts. She made this sampler in 1774. Ten years later, she married William Allis, also from Hatfield. They had seven children.
