About this item

Early geography textbooks often provided biased and stereotypical information. In the fronispiece of this book, stagecoaches, canals, steamboats, and factories signified “Civilized Life”, whereas those who led a “Savage Life” had few possessions, worshipped idols, wore little clothing, and enjoyed none of the modern conveniences of life.
