About this item

This birchbark canoe model was made by an Indigneous artisan for the early tourist trade in New England. It is from Northeastern Maine or New Brunswick, Canada, and was purchased by James Sullivan, who worked for the United States government and went to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to determine the boundaries of Maine, which became a separate state in 1820.
