About this item

This whalebone war club from Nootka Sound, British Columbia, was among the objects the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association received when it purchased Deerfield Academy in 1877.  In the 19th century, libraries and academies often had “cabinets of curiosities,” which were filled with “exotic” items collected and donated by people such as sailors, who had visited faraway lands.
