About this item

Protestants from the 16th century on encouraged believers to read and study the Bible for themselves. This led to a strong emphasis on literacy from a young age.  Scripture History, Abridged met the demand by parents and Sunday School teachers for inexpensive religious literature for children. Published in Boston, Scripture History was “Ornamented” with simple woodcuts of scenes from the Bible such as the story of Adam and Eve, to engage the interest of young readers. The child who wrote “A. Abercrombie’s Book Pelham, Mass. on the book’s cover may have been Asiel Abercrombie (1807-1874) of Pelham, Massachusetts. Asiel attended district school in his town and later attended New Salem Academy in nearby New Salem, Massachusetts. Asiel was 12 years old when Scripture History, Abridged was published in 1819.
