About this item

This is a circa 1905 facsimile of an 18th century New England primer that was advertised as an easy and pleasant guide to the art of reading. The rhyming lessons were intended to teach moral values as well as reading. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, schoolbooks were not provided by the schools and parents had to purchase them from a list approved by their local district school committee.
