In the summer of 1816, Dr. Stephen West Williams (1790-1855) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, gathered plant specimens from throughout the surrounding area. He and Dr. Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864), also of Deerfield, investigated the plants’ medicinal properties and Williams described their uses in a volume accompanying his collection of specimens.
