About this item

This children’s story by Mary P. Wells Smith (1840-1930) was first published in 1904, 200 years after the attack on Deerfield, Massachusetts, on February 29, 1704, when French and Indigenous soldiers from Canada captured more than 100 townspeople and marched them to Canada.  The true story centers on the minister’s son, Stephen Williams, who was held captive for two years before he was redeemed and returned to Deerfield.
