About this item

Dated June 21, 1917, and written from the Marine Barracks in Norfolk, Virginia, this letter from Tom Ashley directs his father in Deerfield, Massachusetts, to search for and to send an important paper “in the middle drawer of the lowboy in the sitting room.” Lt. Ashley does not reveal the contents of the paper, but only stresses that he must have it right away. He laments that he has lost his privileges for the remainder of the month because he was late for drill.
