About this item

Not a great deal is known about Mary Hoyt Wilson (1809-1841), the young author of this sketch, but we do know that she drew it around 1820, several years after the building was built. She was the daughter of Col. John Wilson (1782-1869) and Mary Hoyt Wilson. John Wilson’s printing office produced a number of items typical for a printer of his day, including reprints of popular works and broadsides. The office stands on its original lot  in Deerfield, Massachusetts, but it had been moved five times within Deerfield between 1820 and 1950, before returning to its original location. When Henry Flynt, founder of Historic Deerfield, Inc., which owns the building, restored the structure, one guide he used was Mary’s sketch.
