About this item

This excerpt is drawn from Francis Parkman’s (1826-1893) last book, published in 1892. It describes the 1704 raid on Deerfield, Massachusetts, by a mixed group of Canadian Indigenous people: Mohawks (known as Kanien’kehaka today) from Kahnawake, Abenakis from St. Francis, and Hurons (known as Wendat today) from Lorette, along with their French allies. Parkman found little favorable to say about the Indigenous people and hints that they were, erroneously, mere pawns of the French.
