Augustus Tack was born in Pennsylvania in 1870. At age 13, he moved to New York, eventually studying at the Art Students League with noted American Impressionists William Merrit Chase and John Twachtman. He opened a studio in 1894, and began a portrait painting business that would support him throughout his life. By the late 19th century he divided his time between New York and Deerfield, Massachusetts, and was very involved in the Deerfield Arts and Crafts Society.
