About this item

Eastern European immigrants arriving in the Massachusetts Connecticut River Valley in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were not welcomed by all. Some residents argued that these immigrants could never assimilate into American life. Others, as in this article, felt that they offered a much needed boost in labor.
