About this item

The Sovereign Shoe Store was located in downtown Greenfield, Massachusetts.  Beginning in the 18th century, Massachusetts was a center of shoe production. It eventually became the leading shoemaking state, a position it held through World War I. Mechanization began in the mid-1800’s and skyrocketed during the Civil War (1861-1865) with so many soldiers needing shoes.
