About this item

This commission of 1793 appoints Deerfield, Massachusetts, resident Epaphras Hoyt (1765-1850) to 2nd lieutenant of a troop of cavalry. Hoyt was a major contributor to town government in Deerfield and had a lifelong interest in military science. He served as postman, justice of the peace, and register of deeds for Franklin County, among other offices. He became a major general in the Massachusetts militia.
