About this item

Seven thousand acres of land are advertised for sale in the towns of Heath and Rowe, Massachusetts. This land was held by an absentee owner in Boston who was reluctant to sell. However, residents of the towns, wanting to grow and prosper, finally convinced the owner to sell this prime land to people who wanted to farm it. The seller would accept pearlash (used in cooking- partially purified potash) and potash as payment, as long as it was delivered to Boston. William Butler began publication of the Hampshire Gazette on September 6, 1786, in Northampton, Massachusetts.
