This article from the Greenfield, Massachusetts, Gazette and Courier tallies the votes by state for the 1896 presidential election as reported by Harper’s Weekly. The election resulted in a large majority of electoral college votes of 271 for William McKinley over 176 for William Jennings Bryan. The popular vote was not as overwhelmingly pro McKinley. He received 7,102,246 to Bryan’s 6,492,559. This article incorrectly reports that McKinley had 282 votes to Bryan’s 165.
