Benevolent societies abounded in New England in the first half of the 19th century. This article reports that a number of them in Franklin County, Massachusetts, held their annual meetings on October 11, 1837, to appoint officers and give financial reports. All the officers elected were men, although women played a large role in the organization of the societies as well as the day-to-day activities. The Gazette & Mercury was the newspaper in Greenfield, Massachusetts, from June 27, 1837, to July 13, 1841, when it changed its name to the Gazette & Courier.
