About this item

Eunice Tabor’s letter describes the “good many things from Father and Mother and other people” that she received that Christmas, as well as her visit to a Christmas tree at her Sunday school. By 1866, the date of this letter, Christmas, Easter, and Halloween had only been celebrated in New England for about 20 years.  Prior to that, Protestants in Massachusetts and the other New England colonies found these holidays to be too full of paganism and ritual and they were not celebrated.
