About this item

This political cartoon shows a family canoeing their “Good Ship Vacation” through the rocky rapids of vacation costs. After the crash of the stock market in October, 1929, the United States entered a period of severe economic decline. By the 1930s, people who earlier could have afforded a vacation could no longer do so. By 1933, about one-third of U.S banks had failed, leaving people without their savings or any financial safety net.
