About this item

In 1848, many Irish immigrants were employed working on the dam and canals in Holyoke, Massachusetts, here referred to as the “New City.” When the company in charge of the construction reduced wages, the men refused to work. Some said they would work if they were protected, so the chief engineer, constable, and a number of other men accompanied the workmen, who then attacked the protectors with clubs. One of the leaders was arrested and brought to the jail in Northampton. By the time the sheriff arrived, all was quiet and remained so.
