About this item

Arthur W. Hoyt’s finely drawn plan, done at the request of the state legislature, shows the development of  Deerfield, Massachusetts. The growth of the communities of Mill Village, Wapping Village, Bloody Brook  (now called South Deerfield), and Cheapside confirms the expansion of the town’s population outside of the original settlement of Deerfield. Additional roads, the construction of bridges to replace ferries, and an increasing number of schools, academies, and meetinghouses indicates a greater degree of services for inhabitants.
