About this item

Mashalisk and her son were in debt to Springfield, Massachusetts, trader and influential businessman John Pynchon.  They paid their debt by transferring land to him and he also gave them “sixty fada [fathoms] of wampum,” two coats, and other small things.  Mashalisk and her people didn’t believe in owning land and probably thought they were agreeing to share it with Pynchon and other English settlers.
