On September 18, 1675, during King Philip’s (Metacom’s) War (1675-1676), Native Americans ambushed a group of teamsters and soldiers at Muddy Brook in present-day South Deerfield, Massachusetts. The teamsters were attempting to move their grain supplies to safety in a nearby town when they were attacked. Over 40 men were killed and the brook’s name was changed to “Bloody Brook.” in memory of those slain.
