About this item

On the last Tuesday of each quarter, Deerfield Academy held public examinations of the pupils “in the various branches of academic learning.” Twice a year students provided a program of “speeches, declamations, dialogues, and orations.” An Exhibition Ball followed, attended by students and their guests. Mr. Stephen West Williams was seventeen years old in 1807, and a student at the Academy when he received this invitation. John Bennet’s Hall was a tavern located opposite the common in Deerfield, Massachusetts, between 1805 and 1808.
