About this item

Deerfield, Massachusetts, historian George Sheldon wrote extensively about the town’s founding and early history. This is the biography of Reverend John Williams (1664-1729), the town’s first minister. Although his title referred to Williams as “The Redeemed Captive,” Sheldon’s narrative ended before the 1704 raid on the town by French and Indigenous soldiers from Canada, when Williams was captured along with over one hundred of his parishioners.
