About this item

Under a 100-foot long tent in Deerfield, Massachusetts, Gov. Jonathan Belcher met with members of five Indigenous groups in August of 1735. The Governor informed the Native people that information from England assured that peace continued between King George and the French king. However, “if there should happen to be a war between them,” the Governor wanted assurance that the Native people would fight on the side of England.  Deerfield resident Joseph Kellogg acted as interpreter and gifts of wampum were exchanged. At the end of the week, the Reverend John Sargent was ordained as minister to the Stockbridge Indigenous people.
