About this item

The town clerk, an elected official, was responsible for taking notes at town meetings, which were usually held four times each year. Business transacted in the Deerfield, Massachusetts, meeting included the hiring of a schoolmistress, plans for building a new meetinghouse, and the election of town officers. At the April 1729, meeting the town voted that the selectmen “Shall provide on the Town Charge a sutable quantity of Drink and Cake to be spent at the Raising of the Meeting house.”
