About this item

The precarious financial condition of the new nation made supplying Revolutionary War troops with even the bare essentials of food and clothing a daunting task. Ordinary Americans supported the war effort by providing clothing and food as well as by paying taxes. In 1778, residents of Deerfield, Massachusetts, pledged to supply shoes, shirts, and stockings for Deerfield militiamen.
