About this item

All able-bodied men between the ages of sixteen and sixty were eligible for militia duty, and most towns held an annual “Training Day” in the fall and early spring. Although the American Revolution ended in 1783, economic hardship and an armed revolt (Shays’ Rebellion) in Massachusetts in 1786-1787, kept local authorities alert for more trouble. Sergeant David Sexton ordered Deerfield, Massachusetts, resident Consider Dickinson to muster at one o’clock on July 18, 1788, with a working gun, ramrod, bayonet, and cartridge box.
