In 1903, Francis R. Schell donated this bridge to Northfield, Massachusetts, so that he would have easy access between his home on the east side of the Connecticut River and the Northfield railroad station on the west side. The bridge is a 515 foot long steel cantilever truss bridge that was designed by Edward S. Shaw. The bridge was closed in 1985, because it had become unsafe due to deterioration.
