In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, “portieres,” or door curtains, were hung in doorways in the winter to keep out drafts. The Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework of Deerfield, Massachusetts, designed this embroidered and appliqued portiere based on an espaliered rose.
