About this item

This cushion cover was made at a tapestry workshop started in England in the 1560s, by William Sheldon. The cover, a rare survivor, was brought to Massachusetts by the Reverend Edward Taylor in 1668.  He studied divinity at Harvard College and was the minister in Westfield, Massachusetts. The cushion cover made its way to Deerfield, Massachusetts via Taylor’s grandson, the Reverend John Taylor, who was the town’s minister from 1787 to 1806.
