About this item

This fireboard is from the Rufus Saxton house in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Fireboards customarily covered a fireplace opening during the warm months when fires were unnecessary. Many early 19th century fireboards were decoratively painted. This one is painted with a trompe l’oeil view of a well-equipped fireplace.
