Summary and Objective

The goal of this project is for students to demonstrate an understanding of the natural resources, geography, technological and social needs of a factory in 19th century America by synthesizing their knowledge in a site choice for their new factory.

Teaching Plan

  1. Look at the map closely by using the zoom in feature.
  2. Determine where man-made resources are, as well as where natural resources are (the river flows from right to left).
  3. Based on what you know about what factories need, choose a site for your new factory.
  4. Write about your site and justify your choice.
  5. Extensions:
    1. Draw your factory, its floor plan and describe its features.
    2. Design neighborhoods to meet the needs of your workers.
    3. Explain your drawings in writing or in an oral presentation.
