A number of early 19th century New England academies and private libraries had “cabinets of curiosities” filled with curious and exotic items collected by travelers and seamen when they visited far-away places.  This spoon was part of a cabinet of curiosities at Deerfield Academy and is now in the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association’s Memorial Hall Museum in Deerfield, Massachusetts. It is made from mountain goat horn and has two faces caved on the handle with shell inlay for the eyes. The handle detaches from the spoon.
