Nineteenth century academies and libraries often included “cabinets of curiosities”- collections of items from around the world, often considered exotic. They were usually collected and donated by travelers and sailors.  Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts, had a cabinet of of curiosities which became the property of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association when it purchased the building for a museum in 1797.
