About this item

Lake Pleasant in Montague, Massachusetts, became a Spiritualist retreat in the 1870s, and flourished into the 20th century. Many people flocked there each summer to enjoy the water (said to have restorative properties) and to attend seances, concerts, and lectures in a natural, stress-free environment. Spiritualists believed in full equality of the sexes and the possibility for communication wth the dead.
