In 1837, Dr. Stephen West Williams (1790-1855) wrote this biography of his ancestor, the Reverend John Williams (1664-1729), who was captured on February 29, 1704, during an attack on Deerfield, Massachusetts, by French soldiers from Canada and their Indigenous allies. He was held in Canada for two years before he was redeemed and returned to Deerfield.
