About this item

Chauncey Thomas (1877-1950) was a talented potter who briefly worked in Deerfield, Massachusetts during the height of the town’s participation in the national Arts and Crafts Movement (1876-1916). The variety and skill of his works is evident. Thomas was heavily influenced by Art Nouveau, a style widely featured in the art periodicals of his day. This piece shows the influence of Japanese and Chinese style, with its irregular and deliberately artlessly applied glaze.
